Black Canadians face substantial health inequities.

A growing body of research shows that Black Canadians face substantial health inequities. Research suggests health inequities are tied to anti-Black racism and poor outcomes across the social determinants of health (i.e. education, employment, housing, race/racism etc…). Improving health outcomes and addressing the social determinants of health are vital to ensuring that Black Canadians thrive.

Black Canadians are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS in Canada.

Black Canadians are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS in Canada. In 2014, they represented an estimated 16% or one in seven people living with HIV in Canada while representing only 2.5% of the population.

Studies from the U.K. and the U.S show that Black women are at increased risk for more aggressive forms of breast cancer, and are more likely to die from breast cancer than white women.

Mental health and addictions is a growing concern, recent studies have shown that Black Canadians of Caribbean descent in Ontario have 2x twice the delay in getting to evidence-based services than White Europeans

The Federation is exploring opportunities to advance research, innovation, health promotion, and a national action plan to promote the improvement of the health and well-being of Black Canadians, prioritizing issues such as education, employment, housing, mental health and addictions and chronic disease (i.e.diabetes, sickle-cell, cancer and HIV/AIDS)
