International Women’s Day 2026 Recap: Building Resilience, Wellness, and Community
On March 9th, the Federation of Black Canadians (FBC) hosted a powerful International Women’s Day Virtual Fireside Chat, bringing together women from across Canada for an honest, community-centered conversation focused on mental health, navigating academia and early careers, and building resilience while pursuing personal and professional goals. The 90-minute gathering created a supportive space for reflection, connection, and collective empowerment.
The conversation was hosted by Sasha Lovell, Manager of People and Culture at the Federation of Black Canadians, who guided a thoughtful and engaging discussion that encouraged openness, authenticity, and shared learning. Through intentional facilitation, Sasha helped create a welcoming environment where participants felt comfortable discussing both challenges and successes related to women’s wellness, community and more.
The event featured inspiring insights from Karina Deepnarine, Tembeka Pratt, Annmarie Etuk-Campbell, Lateisha Williams, and Kourtni D. Perry, who shared lived experiences and practical strategies for navigating burnout, emotional regulation, systemic barriers, and the transition from school to the workforce. Panelists reflected on the realities of balancing expectations, managing mental wellness, and building sustainable career paths while staying grounded in purpose and community.
Participants joined from across Canada, contributing to a dynamic and supportive dialogue. The discussion highlighted the pressures many women carry and emphasized the importance of setting boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and redefining success on their own terms. Attendees shared reflections on social expectations, microaggressions, and the need for safe spaces where Black women can speak openly and support one another.
The event also reinforced the Federation of Black Canadians’ ongoing impact in creating intentional spaces for dialogue, learning, and community connection. By convening diverse voices and fostering meaningful conversations, FBC continues to support Black women and early-career professionals in navigating systemic barriers, strengthening resilience, and prioritizing wellness. Through initiatives like this fireside chat, FBC advances its commitment to lifelong learning, community wellness, and empowerment.
The session concluded with messages of encouragement and inspiration, reminding participants to dream beyond their surroundings, embrace their journeys, and lean into community support. Attendees described the experience as “soul nourishing” and “a great space,” reflecting the powerful sense of connection created throughout the event.
Through meaningful dialogue, shared experiences, and intentional facilitation, the International Women’s Day Fireside Chat demonstrated the Federation of Black Canadians’ continued leadership in creating spaces that uplift, empower, and connect Black women across Canada.
