Membership Terms of Reference

Organization/ Recognized Group

The Federation of Black Canadians (FBC) welcomes all Canadians of African descent to sign up to become an active member of the organization. There are 2 types of membership: Paid and General.

Who can be a member?

  • Organizations and qualified groups in Canada who align with the mission, values, and work of the Federation of Black Canadians;

Paid Membership

  1. Paid membership shall be available only to members who have made an annual donation of $250 or more, exclusive of membership dues, and who have applied and have been accepted for paid membership in the FBC;
  2. The term of membership of a paid voting member shall be one (1) year, subject to renewal in accordance with the policies of the FBC;
  3. Each paid voting member is entitled to receive notice of, attend and vote at all meetings of members and each such paid member shall be entitled to one (1) vote at such meetings;
  4. Members receive regular information (i.e. newsletters, email notifications);
  5. Members will have access to contact lists for other African Canadian organizations across Canada.

General Members

  1. General members shall be any other groups or individuals recognized in practice by the FBC and admitted in such other manner as may be prescribed by the board by resolution;
  2. Members receive regular information (i.e. newsletters, email notifications);
  3. Members will have access to contact lists for other African Canadian organizations across Canada.

What are the roles and responsibilities of each member?

  1. Members are expected to support the values and objectives of FBC;
  2. Members are expected to volunteer time with their local FBC Hub;
  3. Members will not use the FBC name or brand to further objectives outside the knowledge of the FBC board of directors.

Membership Benefits

  1. Network with Black people in your area and across the country.
  2. Be part of building a successful, sustainable national Black advocacy group working on making systemic change.

Cancel Membership

  1. Members may cancel their membership at anytime;
  2. Membership fee is not refunded upon cancellation.

Revocation of Membership

Members may have membership revoked by the FBC board of directors under the following circumstances:

  1. The member activities run counter to the values and objectives of FBC;
  2. The member misrepresents FBC;
  3. Membership fee is not paid and sufficient arrangements to pay it are not made.

Membership Types and Requirements

Basic Membership Requirements

  • Living in Canada
  • Person is of legal age to sign a formal agreement (Canada 16 years old) – otherwise guardian consent is needed
  • Register with local and or central FBC group
  • Must read and confirm acknowledgement of FBC values, structure, By-laws and code of conduct

General Community Members: Individuals and or Businesses/Groups that have informally declared support for the FBC in verbal, written or other manners mutually understood by both parties.

A person (individual) who signs up via online/hard consent form and/or other member seen as valid to the corporation indicating they support the FBC and signs up to receive various abilities inclusive of:

  1. An online membership profile
  2. The FBC quarterly newsletter
  3. Any FBC surveys (regarding their needs, advocacy, event or news follow-ups)
  4. Invitation to any town hall discussions
  5. The ability to attend the National FBC AGM (however, will not receive the status of voting member)

Registered Community Members: Individuals in any province who formally filled out a membership form online or by paper that indicates that they agree to the FBC mission, values and principles, and voluntarily wish join the ranks of FBC.

A person who pays a minimum annual membership fee ($25) – Receives voting rights at National FBC AGMS

  1. Receives a FBC membership online profile
  2. Added to FBC quarterly newsletter
  3. Receives any FBC surveys regarding (what are their needs, advocacy, event or news follow-ups
  4. Invited to any town hall discussions
  5. They must be invited to attend the National FBC AGM with full voting rights
  6. They are eligible to run for National Board Positions
  7. As FBC develops partnerships and receives various perks/ offerings (ex: affiliate discounts) these may be offered to paid members.

Registered Business Members: Groups or Businesses in any province who formal filled out a membership form online or by paper that indicates that they agree to the FBC Mission, values and principles, and voluntarily wish join the ranks of FBC

Organizations (businesses, social groups, or social sector agencies) that signs up via online/hard consent form indicating they support the FBC and signs up to receive various abilities:

  1. Receives a FBC membership online profile under (Organizational partners)
  2. Added to FBC quarterly newsletter
  3. Receives any FBC surveys regarding (what are their needs, advocacy, event or news follow-ups
  4. Invited to any town hall discussions
  5. They may attend the National FBC AGM but will not receive the status of voting member (only individuals that have registered and paid membership dues).
  6. Organizations may be apart of special meetings called with FBC if the organization donates to FBC and they will receive Tax Receipt. Sponsorship will receive recognition (various forms).

Additional Membership Groups

Volunteers/ Committee Task Support: (internal use) – “refer to Volunteer Role Job Description for more”.

A person who has been appointed to support the work of sub-committees of the FBC to aide in the creation of the National NFP Corporation.

  1. Receives limited access to FBC files (for planning & Development reasons)
  2. Receives a FBC membership online profile
  3. Added to FBC quarterly newsletter
  4. Receives any FBC surveys regarding (what are their needs, advocacy, event or news follow-ups
  5. Invited to any town hall discussions
  6. They must be invited to attend the National FBC AGM with full voting rights (if fee paid)
  7. As FBC develops partnerships and receives various perks/ offerings (ex: affiliate discounts) these may be offered to paid members.

Staff: (internal use) – “refer to Role Job Description for more”

A person who has been hired and or loaned to the work of sub-committees of the FBC to aide in the creation of the National NFP Corporation.

  1. Receives limited access to FBC files (for planning & Development reasons)
  2. Receives a FBC membership online profile
  3. Added to FBC quarterly newsletter
  4. Receives any FBC surveys regarding (what are their needs, advocacy, event or news follow-ups
  5. Invited to any town hall discussions
  6. They must be invited to attend the National FBC AGM with full voting rights (if fee paid)
  7. As FBC develops partnerships and receives various perks/ offerings (ex: affiliate discounts) these may be offered to paid members

Local Hubs

These will be set up within a business franchisee model. In order to be recognized by the National FBC – they must accept and adopt minimum standards including: core values, governance, finance, and engagement standards. Provincial Hubs need to elect leadership (within 18 months of the core founding members coming together to get it started), maintain membership databases and inform and stay connected to the National FBC. Members of Provincial hubs must still register with the National FBC if they wish to have voting rights within the National FBC (pay membership fee). Provincial hub members can register as a supporter if they wish. Full details are within the Provincial Town Hall TOR. There can be multiple local hubs in a province pending they follow basic standards of the National FBC Hubs Terms of Reference.

Provincial Chapters

Each province will only have one Provincial Chapter. The essence of a Provincial chapter is for lead(s) of provinces local hubs to come together across a province (in person/ virtually), to discuss FBC National matters, receive updates from the National FBC Body, and discuss Advocacy priority areas from both a Provincial and National level, and to elect Provincial leadership to sit at the National FBC Elected Board table.

Additional Options

You can also choose to register as a member. Members receive different levels of access, voting rights, and benefits.

General Membership – FREE – Receive access to FBC surveys, town-halls, local provincial hub meetings.

Paid Membership – $25 – In addition to all general membership rights, you also receive voting rights at the National Annual General Meeting (AGM) and any other National Special Meeting (NSM) of the Members.

Partners in Principle – FREE – Black led businesses and or non for profits. Join our PIP group to help bring a voice to the needs of Black businesses across Canada.

Youth Council – FREE – The youth council will ensure that the youth voice is heard, represented, and catered to within alignment of the FBC priority areas. Between the age of 16-29.
