City of Mississauga launches Empowering Change: A Comprehensive Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy

The City of Mississauga’s Empowering Change: A Comprehensive Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy represents a significant step forward in advancing equitable and inclusive practices across municipal operations. This strategy reflects a deliberate commitment to removing barriers, promoting fair access, and ensuring that all residents, employees, and community partners feel valued and supported. By embedding equity, diversity, and inclusion across areas such as policy development, service delivery, employment, and procurement, the City demonstrates a proactive approach that is both accountable and measurable. This article provides a critical review of the strategy, highlighting its strengths, community-centered approach, and potential to foster sustainable, long-term progress.

I must say, this is a very forward-thinking approach and one that is truly worth commending. From the title alone, I was immediately captivated. “Empowering Change: A Comprehensive Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy” clearly signals intention, accountability, and action. In many ways, this strategy reflects exactly why EDI exists in the first place, to intentionally remove barriers, create fair access, and ensure that everyone feels seen, valued, and supported.

What stands out most is the City of Mississauga’s commitment to embedding equity, diversity, and inclusion across all areas of municipal responsibility, from employment and policy development to service delivery and procurement. The emphasis on extensive community engagement reinforces that this work was shaped with the community, not simply for it. By centering the voices of residents, community partners, and City employees, the strategy feels very  grounded, responsive, and people-focused.

I also appreciate the strong focus on accountability, standardized data collection, and clear communication. These elements move EDI beyond intention and into measurable, sustainable impact. This approach not only strengthens trust and transparency but also provides a clear roadmap for long-term progress.

Overall, this strategy represents exactly the kind of EDI work needed to carry communities confidently into the future. It builds on existing priorities while setting a clear, intentional path forward—demonstrating that when equity is embedded in every action, inclusion doesn’t just exist, it drives progress. What are your thoughts on this approach? How can equity, diversity, and inclusion be further strengthened in your community or workplace? Readers are invited to share their perspectives and join the conversation on driving meaningful, lasting change.
