FBC Response to the Crisis In Haiti

August 30, 2021

Haiti, the first Black nation to gain independence, and yet still fighting for it, is currently facing an unprecedented power vacuum.

The recent killing of President Jovenel Moïse, by a squad of gunmen in the early hours of Wednesday, July 7 2021 at his home in Port-au-Prince, has pushed Haiti into a deeper political crisis. The depth of this crisis may exacerbate the growing hunger crisis, gang violence, and COVID-19 outbreak.

Andre Michel, the Haitian opposition politician, has stated that “[t]he assassination has provoked a political and institutional vacuum at the highest level of state” (Reuters). It is also important to recognize that there is no precedent for a situation like this in Haiti and therefore, there are no constitutional provisions in place that can address this directly.

With that said, the situation in Haiti requires a pragmatic and sustainable solution with the help and support of the United Nations and G8 Countries which includes Canada.

The world cannot continue to stand idly by as this country continues to slide into further depths of hopelessness and chaos. It is imperative that we take action and the Federation of Black Canadians urges the Canadian Government to support such action.

The first step for us as a community to support action is to become informed. Therefore, we’ve added resources below that can further educate people on the current situation and what can be done to help.
