Toronto, ON – October 11, 2024 – The Federation of Black Canadians (FBC) is proud to announce the completion of its report on the City of Toronto’s ConnectTO program, an initiative dedicated to bridging the digital divide and expanding free public Wi-Fi access across the city. This partnership ensured that Black Torontonians have their voices heard as the City develops its Expanded Free Public Wi-Fi Strategy.

Currently, over 100 public spaces in Toronto offer free Wi-Fi, and this new strategy aims to significantly enhance that number. To ensure the program is inclusive, the City collected community feedback through the Expanded Free Public Wi-Fi Strategy Survey.

FBC actively participated in engaging Black communities in this effort, ensuring that their specific needs and challenges are represented in the City’s final Wi-Fi strategy. Survey participants not only had a chance to win a $50 gift card, but those joining focus groups receive da $25 gift card as a thank-you for their contributions.

Why This Matters:

  • Closing the Digital Divide: The ConnectTO program aims to address gaps in Wi-Fi access, especially in underserved communities. By participating, residents helped shape the future of internet availability in Toronto.
  • Inclusive Consultation: The FBC’s involvement guarantees that the voices of Black Torontonians are part of the discussion, helping create a more equitable digital landscape.

Focus Group Hosted by FBC

In addition to the survey, the FBC hosted a focus group on June 18th, 2024, to dive deeper into the challenges residents face when accessing free public Wi-Fi. Participants had the opportunity to share their experiences and suggest strategies to improve access citywide.
