On October 23, the Federation of Black Canadians (FBC) hosted its Annual General Meeting (AGM), with 45 participants reflecting on the organization’s 2023 milestones and setting the stage for an exciting year ahead. The meeting, called to order by Robert Tyndale, showcased key accomplishments across FBC’s programs, initiatives, and financial performance. Here’s a recap of the event and its highlights.

2023: A Year of Success for FBC’s Programs

Executive Director Chris Thompson kicked off the meeting by revisiting FBC’s mission to empower Black Canadians through four key pillars: lifelong learning, health, justice, and job creation. These guiding principles informed the successful programs executed in 2023:

Chris emphasized the growth and impact of these programs in uplifting Black communities across Canada, a sentiment echoed by Senior Programs Manager Raquel Reid, who provided further insights into both SSLP and BEP’s expansion plans within 2024.

FBC’s Strong Financial Position in 2023

A major highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the 2023 audited financial statements, which showed a healthy cash position and significant growth in both revenue and expenses, largely due to grants and program development. The SSLP, in particular, played a crucial role in distributing bursaries to students, furthering FBC’s mission of promoting education.

The board reappointed Tino-Gaetani & Carusi Chartered Professional Accountants as the organization’s auditors, ensuring continued transparency and financial accountability. The board approved amendments to the FBC bylaws, updating language related to employment development and lifelong learning.

Celebrating FBC’s Volunteers

The Annual General Meeting also shone a spotlight on FBC’s incredible volunteers. Sasha Lovell, People and Culture Manager, introduced the Volunteer Recognition segment, which honoured two standout individuals:

  • Outstanding New Volunteer Award: Presented to Lesly Nzeusseu, for her active engagement in the volunteer network over the past 3-6 months.
  • FBC Change Maker Award: Awarded to Olivia Okocha for her dedication to driving meaningful change through her work with FBC.

Both awardees shared their personal stories of involvement, showcasing how volunteers are an integral part of the FBC’s ongoing success.

A Look Back: Impact Gala and Board Member Introductions

Attendees were treated to a video recap of the FBC’s 2024 Impact Gala, an inspiring event celebrating Black excellence, community engagement, and fundraising to support FBC’s initiatives.

Robert introduced the other board members and shared their reasons for joining the organization and contributing to the FBC mission. Their collective expertise and passion will continue to drive FBC forward in its quest to create opportunities for Black Canadians.

FBC’s Vision for Continued Growth

As the AGM concluded, Chris Thompson outlined the FBC’s focus areas for 2024/2025. This includes the development of its volunteer arm, enhanced government relations, and continued growth of key programs. FBC’s commitment to empowering Black Canadians through education, job creation, and community initiatives remains at the forefront of its mission.
