Navigating a new country can be a daunting experience, particularly for Black newcomers facing systemic barriers in employment, education, and financial stability. Last Year, The Federation of Black Canadians (FBC), led research to capture the most pressing needs of Black newcomers in Canada. Through this research which included focus groups we were aided by The Students Commission of Canada to create a report on our findings. We’ve used what we learned from the report to address these challenges head-on through its our Newcomers Program. Launched in partnership with Catapult Canada, Rideau Hall, this program is designed to provide Black youth, especially newcomers and NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) individuals, with the tools, mentorship, and support they need to thrive in Alberta and Ontario.
Report Highlights: Advancing Opportunities for Black Newcomers

- Effective Outreach: Combining in-person and online promotion strategies increases program accessibility and engagement.
Voices of Experience: Insights From Participants
“I actually know someone from my country. She went to one of the best universities back home. She was first in her class and all. Then coming here and having all the experience that she did she had to start at square one.”
I will say yes, I have experienced the Canadian work experience barrier, especially when applying for internships or applying for jobs in general.”
“Judgment-free language classes would help us adapt to local communication styles and nuances”
