On February 26, the Federation of Black Canadians (FBC) proudly presented an eye-opening Black History Month Masterclass featuring renowned historian Rito Joseph. This powerful and educational webinar explored the rich, often-overlooked contributions of Black Canadians throughout the country’s early history and their lasting impact on shaping Canada’s identity.

Shining a Light on Forgotten History

One of the standout moments of the session was the incredible story of Matthew LaCosta—a Black man whose role was instrumental in Canada’s foundation. As Rito Joseph detailed, LaCosta played a key part in facilitating relationships between Indigenous people and European settlers, including Samuel de Champlain, in the early 1600s. This historical account challenges the commonly taught colonial narrative and underscores the long-standing presence and influence of Black Canadians in shaping the nation’s history.

Expanding Our Understanding of Canadian History

Throughout the masterclass, Joseph encouraged participants to rethink the history they’ve been taught by introducing perspectives that highlight Black and Indigenous collaborations. By sharing stories like LaCosta’s, Joseph pushed for a broader and more inclusive understanding of Canada’s past. The masterclass sparked engaging discussions and inspired attendees to continue learning and amplifying diverse voices.

Why This Masterclass Matters

This event wasn’t just a history lesson—it was a call to action. Rito Joseph reminded us of the importance of acknowledging and honouring the contributions of Black Canadians, not only during Black History Month but every day. By expanding our knowledge and questioning mainstream historical narratives, we take a step closer to building a more inclusive and accurate representation of Canada’s heritage.
