The Federation of Black Canadians (FBC) and Skills4Life are excited to announce that applications are now open for the newly revamped Supports for Student Learning (SSLP), funded by Scotiarise. This updated program is designed specifically for Black youth in Grades 9–12 who are ready to take charge of their future through mentorship, skill-building, and hands-on learning.
We are thrilled to partner with Skills4Life to run the next set of cohorts, bringing additional expertise, mentorship, and community support to youth participants.
Program Overview

Format: 8-week virtual program with interactive in-person activities

Audience: Black youth, Grades 9–12
The modernized SSLP focuses on preparing youth for success in school, career, and life while empowering them to thrive in their communities.
What Youth Will Learn Each Week:

Week 1 — Foundations & Future Planning
Set SMART goals for school, career, money, and health. Learn to leverage digital tools and mentorship, and participate in team-building and fitness activities. -
Week 2 — Civic Engagement & Power Structures
Explore how government works, discover your civic power, and create a mini Civic Action Plan through advocacy and volunteer activities. -
Week 3 — Modern Job Market & Future-Proof Skills
Prepare for careers in a rapidly changing, AI-driven workforce. Build résumés, digital portfolios, and personal brands, with guidance from professionals. -
Week 4 — Self-Esteem, Mental Wellness & Leadership
Strengthen mental wellness, leadership, and conflict resolution skills while exploring identity and building a support network. -
Week 5 — Black Canadian History & Cultural Literacy
Celebrate Black Canadian history, innovation, and excellence through research projects and cultural excursions. -
Week 6 — Financial Literacy & Modern Money Management
Learn practical money skills including budgeting, credit, banking, and investing, with simulations and financial expert guidance. -
Week 7 — Navigating Post-Secondary Education
Explore options for college, university, trades, and entrepreneurship, with strategies for academic success, networking, and budgeting for student life. -
Week 8 — Technology & AI Literacy + Final Review
Learn to use AI ethically and effectively, develop a final AI-assisted project, and celebrate program achievements.
