The Green Family’s $10,000 Donation Strengthens the Federation of Black Canadians’ Mission

Oct 9, 2024

The Barry and Laurie Green Family Charitable Trust has made a generous $10,000 donation to the Federation of Black Canadians (FBC) and the Skills for Life (SFL) initiative. This contribution marks a significant boost for key programs, such as the Black Entrepreneurship Program (BEP) and the Success for Student Learning Program (SSLP), which aims to empower Black youth across Canada.

A Tradition of Giving Back

The Barry and Laurie Green Family Trust has a long-standing commitment to community support. During a recent call with Barry Green, we learned about their unwavering dedication to advancing education, human rights, and reconciliation with Indigenous communities. Barry also expressed enthusiasm for extending their impact to underserved Black communities through initiatives that promote equity and serve broader populations facing systemic barriers.

Barry credits his mother Goldie for helping to instill the spirit of giving in him and his brother and sisters. “Philanthropy was always a key part of our family ethic and philosophy,” he says. “It’s always a cliché to say ‘give back to the community’, but truly, that was a given since childhood for all of us.”

The recent $10,000 donation to the FBC is a natural extension of the Trust’s commitment to equity, education, and opportunity, especially within marginalized communities. Nearly 40% of the Trust’s funding supports causes related to ethnicity and cultural identity, demonstrating their focused dedication to fostering inclusion and diversity. Supporting Programs That Create Impact

This donation will enhance the Federation of Black Canadians’ key initiatives, notably the Black Entrepreneurship Program and the Support for Student Learning Program  as well as Skills for Life’s Programs. These programs play a critical role in empowering youth by providing mentorship, resources, and skills development. The BEP program helps young Black entrepreneurs secure the guidance, funding, and networks necessary to grow their businesses. Meanwhile, the SSLP program offers tools and training that prepare youth for success in education and life, paving the way for a more inclusive future.

With the support from Barry and Laurie Green, the FBC can expand these programs and offer even more opportunities to the next generation of Black leaders, amplifying the impact of these vital initiatives.

A Call to Action

The Green family’s donation is more than just financial support—it represents the power of community-driven philanthropy. As the Federation of Black Canadians continues to expand its reach, contributions like these will play a crucial role in transforming the lives of youth across the country. The FBC extends a heartfelt invitation to anyone inspired by Barry and Laurie’s generosity to join in supporting their programs. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference.

The Barry and Laurie Green Family Charitable Trust’s contribution reaffirms their legacy of giving and strengthens the efforts of the FBC in building a more inclusive future for Black Canadians. Their leadership in philanthropy continues to inspire others, shining a light on the power of community and collective action. Thank you Barrie and Laurie Green Family Trust from all of FBC and Skills for Life for your generous donation!
