National Partners Group Meeting

Networking is not just about collecting contacts, it is about building meaningful relationships and partnerships.

On April 26th and July 25th, we successfully hosted another National Partners Group Meeting to connect members of the community together. It was an interactive session where members of some of our partner organizations such as the Michaelle Jean Foundation, Pan-Canadian Association of Nurses of African Descent, Ninandotoo Society, the Somali Services for Families and ASE Foundation shared the amazing work that they do for the Black Canadian community.

The National Partners Group Meetings are held every quarter and the next meeting will be on October 26th, 2023, at 5 pm PST / 8 PM EST. Would you like to be a speaker and share your organization’s work to a wider audience? Email faduma@fbcfcn.ca for more details.

Black Entrepreneurship Program (BEP)

The Black Entrepreneurship Program is a free virtual and mentorship program for Black youth between the ages of 15-29 years old. Participants get to engage in 4 month of entrepreneurship training, 1-1 mentorship with Black Founders and get the chance to enter in a pitch competition at the end of their cohort to win funding to help start up their businesses. Cohort 2 is currently ongoing and Cohort 1 has just come to a close and below are some of the topics and facilitators we’ve had!

Supports For Student Learning Program (SSLP)

Following the success of the Brampton cohort, we launched four more cohorts in Ottawa, Calgary, Regina, and Vancouver. Each week the students had a 1-hour learning session followed by a 1-hour physical education session.

Over the past few weeks, the students from the Calgary, Ottawa, Saskatchewan, and Vancouver cohorts learned how to engage in their community, understand the job market and build their confidence through an interactive wellness session.

Immunization Partnership Fund

On April 21st, 2023, our Executive Director, Chris Thompson joined MP Shaun Chen; Chenai Kadungure (Executive Director of Black Physicians Association of Ontario, BPAO), and Dr. Neil (BPAO Board Member and Black Creek Clinic Lead) to officially announce that the Public Health Agency of Canada invested over $286,000 through the Immunization Partnership Fund.

Of that fund, the FBC received $100,000 to deliver its project, entitled: COVID-19 Conversations with the Black Community. The goal was to create safe spaces for open dialogue, interrupt misinformation, increase vaccine knowledge, and connect black health workers with the community. FBC also provided 5 community groups with Micro-Contributions between $1000-$3000 to support and empower them to engage their unique community in a way that worked for them. By the end of the project, we were able to reach approximately 60,000 users across Canada, hold an online event with over 80 in attendance and engage over 50 people to participate in focus groups for our surveys. The groups we engaged for this project were Restore International, Jaku Konbit, Racialized Students in Healthcare, African Youth Growth Foundation, and Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum.

The Black Accessibility Knowledge (BLAcK) Hub is Canada’s first ever all encompassing Black-centred accessibility hub! It is a confidential, fully accessible, and free resource for Black people with disabilities of all ages, their families, caregivers and support networks. During this unique showcase, attendees connected with a community of Black entrepreneurs, investors, technology professionals and operators all going for the conference. They also learnt about emerging technologies and how to make the most of their experiences.
